Stop Work Authority means every professional has the right and responsibility to stop a task when they believe continuing could create an unsafe situation. It is not about disrupting work unnecessarily. It is about preventing incidents before they happen by giving people the confidence to raise concerns, challenge unsafe behaviour and make positive interventions. At Atlas NextWave, we want the message to be stronger than simply: You can stop work. Why speaking up matters
Unsafe situations do not always begin with a major failure. They can start with a small change in conditions, an overlooked hazard, unclear communication or someone taking a shortcut. The people closest to the work are often the first to notice when something is not right. A simple approach: STOP, ASSESS, ACT
When you see something unsafe:
Stop
Pause the task before anyone is exposed to unnecessary risk.
Assess
Understand what has changed, what the hazard is and who could be affected.
Communicate
Explain the concern clearly to the people involved and, where appropriate, raise it with the supervisor or HSE team.
Control
Make sure the hazard has been addressed and the correct controls are in place.
Resume
Only continue once everyone involved is satisfied that the work can proceed safely.
The objective is simple: deal with the risk before the work continues.
Creating an environment where people feel safe to intervene
