Stop Work Authority: speaking up can save lives
Safety should not sit outside the workforce solution. In high-risk industries, clients need more than qualified people; they need professionals who are properly prepared, supported and able to contribute to a safer working environment. At Atlas NextWave, our in-house Health & Safety expertise allows us to go beyond mobilisation and work with clients on competence, safety performance and targeted improvement.
Atlas NextWave provides skill and competence assessments to help demonstrate that candidates have reached an appropriate level of readiness before mobilisation. We currently provide this service for drilling clients in both the Caribbean and the North Sea, and competence assessments also form part of our Greenhands approach worldwide. This adds another layer of assurance beyond checking experience and certification. It gives clients greater confidence that the professionals entering the workforce have been assessed against the skills expected for the role.
Our involvement does not stop once someone starts work. For clients across both drilling and renewables, Atlas NextWave participates in regular HSE review meetings with operational and safety teams. These conversations create an opportunity to review performance, discuss observations, share lessons learned and identify where additional attention may be needed. That ongoing dialogue helps turn Health & Safety into part of the client relationship, rather than something that is only discussed after an incident.
The people working closest to the operation can provide valuable insight into what is happening day to day. Safety conversations, contractor observations, performance reviews and feedback can help identify recurring themes or risks that may otherwise be difficult to see. Looking at those patterns allows us to move beyond individual incidents and ask a more useful question: what are we seeing, what are we learning and what should we do about it? Where a recurring issue is identified, the answer may not always be more training for the individual. The underlying cause could sit in behaviour, supervision, processes, communication or the wider working environment.
This is where proactive HSE support can add greater value. By combining workforce insight with in-house Health & Safety expertise, Atlas NextWave can help clients identify where targeted action may be needed. That could involve focused safety conversations, awareness initiatives, competence support, trend analysis or project-specific interventions around an identified risk. The objective is not simply to report what has happened. It is to help understand why it is happening and what can be done differently.
Having dedicated Health & Safety expertise within Atlas NextWave is an important differentiator. Our Health & Safety Manager, Mark McDonald, works directly with our teams, professionals and clients to strengthen safety awareness, support competence and identify opportunities to improve the working environment. For clients, that means HSE knowledge sits inside the workforce partnership rather than being treated as an external add-on.
Our Zero Harm approach is built around a simple idea: safer work comes from better preparation, active engagement, continuous learning and the confidence to act when something is not right. By combining the insight of our workforce with dedicated in-house HSE expertise, we can help clients go beyond traditional staffing and strengthen safety across the wider operation.
