Atlas NextWave is launching She Goes Offshore, a new initiative created to inspire, inform and connect women who want to build a career in the offshore energy and maritime industries. Beginning in Mexico and expanding across Latin America and the Caribbean, the programme will combine visibility, professional networks and practical career guidance to help more women explore the opportunities available offshore and understand how to access them.

The offshore workforce must change

The offshore world offers careers filled with technical challenge, international experience, responsibility and opportunity. Yet the people working at sea still do not reflect the full breadth of talent available. The most recent global Women in Maritime Survey, published by IMO and WISTA in May 2025 using data collected in 2024, found that women accounted for only 1% of the seafarers employed by the organisations surveyed. While this figure does not represent every part of the offshore energy industry, it demonstrates how significant the gender gap at sea remains.

Representation also influences who can imagine themselves in an industry. When women rarely see other women working offshore, leading crews or building successful careers at sea, those opportunities can appear distant or inaccessible. At the same time, more companies across energy, marine and offshore are setting measurable ambitions to increase female participation in their workforces. Reaching those ambitions requires more than a statement or target. It requires visibility, access to talent, clear career pathways and long-term investment in recruitment and retention.

Turning ambition into a clear career path

She Goes Offshore has been created to help close the distance between interest and opportunity. Through locally organised sessions, participants will be introduced to the breadth of careers available offshore, from marine and technical operations to safety, logistics, project support and leadership. The sessions will create space for honest conversations about life offshore, the capabilities employers need, the training and certification that may be required, and the realities women can expect when entering a traditionally male-dominated working environment.

Just as importantly, She Goes Offshore will bring people together. Participants will be able to meet other women in the industry, learn from their experiences and build connections with employers, professional networks and Atlas NextWave specialists who understand the local market. Our involvement will not end when an event finishes. Atlas NextWave’s teams will continue helping women understand suitable career routes, prepare for future opportunities and connect with employers when their experience and qualifications meet the requirements.

Built locally, connected regionally

The first She Goes Offshore event will take place in Mexico, followed by sessions planned across Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and other markets in Latin America and the Caribbean. Every country has its own offshore industry, talent landscape and barriers to entry. The initiative will therefore be shaped locally rather than following one standard format. Our teams will work with women, clients, professional networks and industry leaders in each market to understand where support can make the greatest difference. What connects every session is one shared ambition: to make offshore careers more visible, accessible and achievable for women.

Working with the Women’s Energy Network

Atlas NextWave is developing the initiative in collaboration with the Women’s Energy Network, beginning with the WEN Mexico Chapter. WEN is a global organisation that provides networking, education and leadership development opportunities for professionals across the energy value chain. Its experience and community complement Atlas NextWave’s recruitment knowledge, local market presence and relationships with offshore employers. Together, we can create conversations that lead to stronger networks, clearer career pathways and, ultimately, more women entering and progressing within the industry.

“She Goes Offshore is not a one-off campaign. It is a long-term commitment to make offshore careers visible, accessible and achievable for more women across Latin America and the Caribbean. It also shows clients what Atlas NextWave stands for. We understand their workforce ambitions, we invest in local talent and we are prepared to help create the pipelines the industry needs rather than wait for them to appear.”

Lourdes Landa, Business Director South America & Mexico

Action that creates opportunity

At Atlas NextWave, we have already seen the expertise, resilience and leadership women bring to offshore environments. She Goes Offshore is our commitment to ensuring that more women can discover this world and receive the guidance, connections and opportunities needed to become part of it. For employers, the initiative offers a meaningful way to engage with an underrepresented talent pool and strengthen future workforce pipelines. For women, it sends a clear message: there is a place for you offshore, and Atlas NextWave is here to help you find your way.
