New Safe Weight Limit Rules for the UK North Sea
New legislation concerning safe weight limits for personnel working in the UK sector of the North Sea will come into effect on 1 November 2026. Over the next ten months, all contractors operating in this region will receive guidance and updates to ensure full awareness and compliance. Why this change is happening
Recent industry data shared by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) shows that almost five percent of offshore workers now exceed 125 kilograms when fully clothed. This trend has a direct impact on the safe operation of offshore rescue equipment. To address this, the offshore industry is collectively introducing a maximum clothed weight limit of 124 kilograms for anyone travelling to or working on an offshore installation in the UK North Sea. Safety remains a shared responsibility. These changes are being introduced to ensure that every offshore worker can be supported safely during transport, evacuation, and emergency response.

Phased introduction
To give everyone time to prepare, the industry will adopt a staged roll out, starting with an introduction and awareness period from 1 November 2025 to 31 January 2026, followed by a transition phase from 1 February 2026 to 31 October 2026, before mandatory implementation begins on 1 November 2026. Throughout this entire period, Atlas NextWave will keep all contractors informed of requirements, timelines, and practical steps.
How compliance will be managed
Compliance will be monitored through routine offshore medicals, operator mobilisation procedures, and updated heliport processes, which together ensure the safe weight limit is applied consistently across the industry. Contractors may notice changes to check in, documentation requirements, or mobilisation workflows as the roll out progresses.
