Where will the next generation of data centre talent come from?

As demand for data centre talent grows, employers will need to look beyond traditional talent pools. Professionals from energy, infrastructure and other mission-critical industries could provide part of the answer.

The data centre industry needs more skilled people. But that does not necessarily mean everyone joining the industry must already have years of direct data centre experience. Many of the capabilities needed to design, build, commission and operate data centres already exist in neighbouring industries. The opportunity is to identify where experience can transfer, where additional development is needed and how professionals can be introduced to a growing market.

The answer may already be working in another industry

Data centres combine physical infrastructure, power, cooling, automation and digital technology. That creates demand for a broad range of people, from construction managers and electrical engineers to commissioning specialists, project controls professionals and critical operations teams. These capabilities are not exclusive to data centres. They can also be found across energy, renewables, utilities, advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, defence and other technically complex sectors. Professionals from these industries are often accustomed to working in environments where safety, reliability and procedural discipline are essential. They understand complex project schedules, technical interfaces and the consequences of getting something wrong. The challenge is recognising which experience is genuinely relevant.

Energy and infrastructure skills can create new pathways

The relationship between energy and data centres is becoming increasingly important. Every facility requires access to reliable power, and larger developments can involve generation, transmission, substations, backup systems and complex grid connections. Electrical engineers, high-voltage specialists, project managers and construction professionals from energy and utility markets may therefore bring valuable knowledge. Renewables professionals can contribute experience in power integration, environmental considerations and the delivery of large infrastructure projects. People from oil and gas, offshore and marine environments may also possess relevant skills in mechanical and electrical systems, commissioning, maintenance, HSE and the mobilisation of project teams. Moving into data centres can offer these professionals a new career direction while giving employers access to talent beyond the usual candidate pool.

Other mission-critical industries have something to offer

Advanced manufacturing, semiconductor and pharmaceutical facilities share several characteristics with data centres. They require carefully controlled environments, reliable systems, automation, quality management and structured commissioning. Defence and other mission-critical sectors can provide professionals who understand security, resilience and strict operational procedures. Aviation, transport and telecommunications can offer further expertise in continuous operations, connectivity and infrastructure maintenance. The most useful question is therefore not always: “Has this person worked in a data centre before?” It may be: “Has this person successfully worked with similar systems, responsibilities and risks?”

Transferable does not mean interchangeable

Broadening the talent pool does not mean lowering standards. A similar job title can represent very different responsibilities across industries. A commissioning engineer from an energy project, for example, may understand complex systems and integrated testing but still require additional knowledge of data centre standards, controls or operating procedures. An electrical specialist may possess the technical foundation but need experience with the particular redundancy and reliability requirements of a critical environment.

Each transition should be assessed individually. Employers need to understand:

  • Which technical capabilities transfer directly
  • Which sector-specific knowledge is missing
  • Whether additional training or certification is required
  • How the individual responds to high-pressure project environments
  • Whether their expectations match the location, schedule and nature of the work

Building a sustainable talent pipeline

Recruiting only from within the existing data centre workforce moves people between employers but does not necessarily increase the overall supply of talent. Creating a stronger pipeline requires the industry to welcome people with relevant experience, make career pathways more visible and invest in the development of new entrants. It also means engaging professionals before a project reaches its busiest phase.
