What is a Greenhand?

A Greenhand is an entry-level offshore employee who demonstrates basic proficiency in performing assigned tasks as per the job description. While these candidates may not have direct offshore experience, they typically possess transferable skills, a strong work ethic, and the right attitude to adapt and perform effectively in an offshore environment.

Atlas NextWave identifies suitable greenhand candidates through a structured interview process and skills tests, in order to select only candidates with demonstrable potential. After selection, Atlas ensures that each greenhand successfully completes all mandatory training and certifications for offshore work.

In addition to technical preparation, Atlas places a strong emphasis on risk awareness and emergency preparedness. Greenhands are trained to recognize, assess and respond adequately to potential hazards. Through targeted safety training by the Health and Safety Manager and extensive onboarding programs, greenhands are not only prepared for their role, but also equipped to actively contribute to a safe and responsible work culture.

Atlas NextWave organizes special Greenhands Offshore Induction Days, where participants are carefully prepared for a career offshore. During this day, they participate in a personal one-on-one interview, undergo an aptitude test, receive specific advice about living and working offshore, and receive safety training from our Health & Safety Manager – an experienced offshore safety officer. The interactive day includes:

Offshore Safety & Risk Awareness: Red Zone, barrier management, process safety, COSHH, risk management tools, Stop Work Authority, and injury prevention.
Emergency Response Preparedness: Scenario-based training, survival skills, and emergency drills.
Soft Skills & Professional Readiness: Teamwork, offshore communication, problem-solving, and adapting to offshore life.
Client & Industry Knowledge: Project expectations, timesheet management, commercial awareness, and industry insights.

How do I attend a Greenhand Training Day?

Register for one of our upcoming Training Days and complete your Atlas account. Once submitted, our recruitment team will review your application and confirm your place.

What happens during the Greenhand Training Day?

During training, you’ll complete safety training with our HSE Manager, learn about the Greenhands Offshore recruitment process in Namibia, and take a skills test.

Where does the training take place?

The Greenhands Offshore introduction days are organised in Walvis Bay & Windhoek.

How long is the training?

The training lasts 1 - 1.5 days (to be confirmed). All activities, including safety awareness, recruitment overview, and the aptitude test, take place on the same day.

What job can I be offered as a result of Greenhand training?

After training, we promote your CV to clients for Greenhand positions. Depending on demand, both rotational and ad hoc jobs may be available.

How much does it cost to attend?

The Training Day is free of charge and funded by Atlas NextWave. Candidates only need to cover personal costs such as travel, meals, or accommodation if required.

What certificates are needed for Greenhand Roustabout?

To work in Namibia as a Greenhand Roustabout, you will need (T) BOSIET or BOSIET with CA-EBS, IMIST, Banksman Slinger Initial, IWCF Level 1 - Free Online Course and other client-required training.

What certificates are needed for Steward / Stewardess?

To work in Namibia as a Steward or Stewardess, you will need (T) BOSIET or BOSIET with CA-EBS, IMIST and any additional training as required by the client.

How it works

By registering for a Greenhand Training Day, you’ll create a MyAtlas account. Verify it and update your profile with your CV and any existing certificates.

Attend a Greenhand Training Day

If your profile matches the Greenhand criteria, you’ll be invited to a Training Day. As we receive many applications, this process may take some time.

Get your certificates

After attendance, selected candidates are given access to exclusive discounted training rates with our training providers.

Land your first offshore job

Obtained certificates can then be uploaded to MyAtlas. Our recruiters can now start looking for your first placement with one of our many drilling clients.
