First Mate

Rotation: 21 Days On / 21 Days Off

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced First Mate to support the Captain in the safe and efficient operation of a MultiCat vessel working on dredging projects. As the second-in-command, you will play a key role in vessel navigation, crew leadership, safety management, and daily marine operations while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Captain with the safe operation of the vessel and onboard crew.

• Support voyage planning, navigation, and vessel maneuvering.

• Operate navigational equipment, including electronic charts, radar, radios, and depth sounders.

• Assist with docking, undocking, towing, and other vessel operations.

• Help supervise daily vessel activities and coordinate work assignments for crew members.

• Maintain vessel stability during operational activities.

• Perform routine inspections of vessel equipment and assist with maintenance activities.

• Maintain accurate bridge logs, Daily Project Reports (DPRs), and vessel documentation.

• Prepare purchase orders, provisioning requests, and port documentation.

• Monitor bridge equipment inventories and maintain required records.

• Ensure crew schedules comply with IMO Crew Rest Hour requirements.

• Assist with vessel inspections and regulatory compliance.

• Conduct safety meetings, emergency drills, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and Hazard Analyses.

• Promote a strong safety culture and support Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) initiatives.

• Perform additional duties as assigned to support project operations.

Qualifications

• Valid MMC with Mate, Pilot, or Master endorsement indicating Mate of Towing Vessels.

• Minimum 300 Gross Ton endorsement required.

• Valid route endorsement for Inland or Nearshore routes.

• Western Rivers or Great Lakes Only endorsements do not qualify.

• Strong navigation, communication, and leadership skills.

• Ability to multitask and perform effectively in a fast-paced marine environment.

• Willingness to live and work aboard the vessel during 21-day rotations.

• Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

Physical Requirements

Candidates should be able to:

• Lift and carry up to 30 lbs independently.

• Climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated work areas.

• Work in confined spaces and varying outdoor conditions.

• Perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and walking for extended periods.

• Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, life vests, and other site-specific safety equipment.
